Crankshafts

Crankshafts, serve mainly to transfer the force generated by the fuel combustion in the cylinders to the drive wheels, converting kinetic energy into mechanical one.

Crankshafts are usually made of high-strength steel or cast iron. They are designed to withstand high stresses and strains imposed during engine operation, such as the pressure exerted by the connecting rods and the combustion force . The crankshaft is linked to the connecting rods by joint bearings, which allow the shaft to turn smoothly and reduce friction.

Crankshaft design is critical to engine performance and must be balanced to ensure smooth operation. The length and position of the crankshafts must be engineered so that the forces generated by the connecting rods are evenly distributed along the shaft. In addition, the crankshaft must be designed to withstand the stresses and strains to which it is subjected, such as bending and torsion.

The crankshaft also plays an important role in lubricating the engine, as oil is pumped through passageways in the crankshaft to lubricate the joint bearings and reduce friction and wear.
